“Giving money and power to Government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys” (P.J.O’Rourke)

Thought-junkie?

I’m beginning to see blogland as millions of thought-junkies. Holy shit. They read anything, all hours of the day, follow links anywhere if they can just find some thought. They cluster around new thought, talk about it and move on as soon as they’ve processed it. They sit at their desks, hitting refresh, hoping for thought. Thought, thought, thought. Emotion and thought. I do it as much as anyone, but it makes me sad that I’m pulled out of my own life into a world of others’ thought.

I am one of them, no point in denying that. But I’m not sad about that. Why should I be sad that I like to spend much of my time thinking and reading interesting stuff instead of, well, running around on a beach or whatever? That’s just revealed preferences in a nutshell – if I wanted to do something else, I’d not be sitting here writing this post.

Anyway, if I was on a beach, I wouldn’t be running around or swimming or something like that – the best thing to do on a beach is to read a book. Substitute “beach” with a lot of other places and you get the same answer. The internet really hasn’t changed all that much in this respect. I was a thought-junkie before the -net as well.
